The Post War Cards Newsletter #34
Missing 1969 Topps Deckle Edge, Larry Doby Crossovers, A 1991 Nike Spike Lee Factory Set Box, '90s OPC BB Cards, The Non-Sports Bible, And Party Like It's 1989
Been seeing a lot of neat stuff on social media—here’s a bunch of it all in one place!
⚾️ Missing 1969 Topps Deckle Edge Cards
The Custom Baseball Cards group on Facebook is full of talent and inspiration; one user has been sharing 1969 Topps Deckle Edge customs that were “missing from the original set.” Here’s the Hank Aaron they designed; card 35 is Frank Robinson, and card 36 is Lou Piniella.
⚾ Larry Doby Crossovers
On May 1st, Scott Stuber shared the following pair of MLB Hall of Famer Larry Doby cards on X without any caption.
The item on the left isn’t a Type Photo used for the 1951 Bowman on the right (let me know if you’ve seen a true original); it’s likely a 1949 Cleveland Indians Picture Pack (Action) card. The same image was used for Doby’s 1949 Num Num Cleveland Indians, 1950 Bowman, and 1950 Cleveland Indians Picture Pack cards. I’ve always been a fan of type photos and crossovers. I have a page dedicated to those from the 1952 Topps set; please reach out if you have any additions!

🏀 Unopened Item Of The Week - 1991 Nike Spike Lee Michael Jordan Factory Set Box
I primarily focus on vintage unopened items in the Unopened Market Report, so I thought I’d share a cool modern item here. On April 21st, this BBCE authenticated a 1991 Nike Michael Jordan Spike Lee box of 40 sets sold for $2,050 on eBay. Honestly, I’d never seen one before.
Enjoying the newsletter? Considering upgrading for the weekly Unopened Market Report! Monday’s highlighted 1977 Topps Cards in 1975 Topps Baseball Boxes, 1986 Topps Factory Sealed Sets and Cases, Fleer Big Signs Football Boxes, and A 1983 Topps Football Cello Pack With Walter Payton On Top.

🇨🇦 1992 OPC Baseball Cards
Here’s some OPC Baseball history courtesy of NotRichFromBaseballCards on IG (posted March 24th):
The end of an era. This is the last o-pee-chee set that mirrored the Topps design. The 1992 set was identical to the Topps release in size and featured the return of the O-Pee-Chee logo on the front for the first time since 1989.
The all star card subset was replaced by cards unique to the opc set, including a five card Gary Carter tribute.
1993 would see o-pee-chee release a design of their own for the first time and 1994 would be the final release.
📚 The Non-Sports Bible
On April 2nd, Collexicon shared an advertisement for one of my favorite hobby library items, Chris Watson’s Non-Sports Bible.
Today's look back at hobby publication ads is a double feature for the legendary Non-Sports Bible by Chris Watson, a massive tome of a book that now regularly sells for over $500! From issue #231 of The Wrapper, Nov. 15, 2008.
There are two available on eBay right now, one asking $777 and another ~$705 (from Canada). Two were sold in April, one on April 16th for $350 and another on the 24th for $312. If you want one, I’d recommend grabbing a copy ASAP. They’re going to dry up with a total printing of 500.
🍄 Party Like It’s 1989!
On May 2nd, TanManBaseballFan said, “Have a great weekend, peeps! Party like it's 1989,” and included the following image.
I never noticed the common color themes between Super Mario 2 (October 1988 release) and 1989 Topps Baseball, but I think the M.U.S.C.L.E. figure 10-packs came out in 1985. They could have been sold for years; I have no idea.
Happy collecting!
